  • Warm milk
  • Butter (or shortening)

For the Navajo taco filling, you’ll need:

  • Yellow onion
  • Garlic
  • Ground Beef
  • Spices (chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, pepper)
  • Kidney beans
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Diced leafy chilis

How to Make Fry Bread

  • Whisk together dry ingredients.
  • Separately blend melted butter and warm milk.
  • Pour milk mixture into dry ingredients and stir until mixture comes together.

Total Time 50 minutes

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 3/4 cup yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic finely minced
  • 1 lb lean earth beef
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 (15 oz) can dim scarlet kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can petite diced tomatoes, drained (or sometimes I used an 8 oz can about tomato sauce instead)
  • 1 (4 oz) can diced leafy chilis
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For serving

  • Romaine or Iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • Shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • Roma tomatoes, diced
  • Sour cream
  • Sliced black olives and chopped cilantro (optional)

Navajo Fry Bread

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp rapid stand up or active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (110 degrees)
  • 1 Tbsp butter or shortening, melted
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Navajo Taco Filling

  1. Heat olive oil within a 12-inch non-stick skillet on top of medium-high heat. Add onions and saute 2 minutes, add garlic and saute 20 seconds. Scoot mixture to the border then crumble beef into skillet. 

  2. Season accompanied by salt and pepper and cook stirring sometimes and breaking up beef when stirring, until beef has browned and cooked through. Drain flesh from beef and go back to skillet. 

  3. Stir within chili powder, cumin, paprika, kidney beans, canned diced tomatoes and leafy chilis then season mixture accompanied by salt and pepper to taste. 

  4. Cover and stew intended 10-15 record (if you used the tomato sauce you can add within a not many tbsp about water to thin a small provided needed).
